Hypnosis is routinely used in sports to improve performance as athletes very often engage in self-hypnosis even if unaware. Professional athletes also engage the skills of a hypnotherapist to enhance performance. In a few published studies, hypnosis has been effective. Hypnosis has been shown to improve 3-point performance in basketball (Pates, Cummings, & Maynard, 2002). Hypnosis has been shown to improve golf putting performance as well (Pates, Oliver, & Maynard, 2001). Hypnosis has also been used to increase performance at the professional golf level too (Pates, 2013).
